How to add the Google meta tag to your site
This week I verified wowsb ship tool with Google Search Console so Google notices the site. The easiest way to finish verification is the meta tag method. You paste one small line into your page and re-upload the site. Here is how I do it, with the code included.
What Google gives you
When you add a property in Google Search Console and pick the meta tag method, Google shows a line like this and a Copy button:
<meta name="google-site-verification" content="PASTE-YOUR-CODE-HERE" />
What to do
- Open the
index.htmlof your homepage in a text editor. - Find your
<head>...</head>. It is the top section with the page title. - Paste the meta tag somewhere inside there. I put mine right after the other meta tags.
- Save the file.
- Re-upload the site to your host. This site runs on Netlify, so I drag the folder onto netlify.com/drop again.
- Go back to Google and click Verify.
Where it ends up in the file
This is what the top of your page should roughly look like after you paste it in:
<!DOCTYPE html> <html lang="en"> <head> <meta charset="UTF-8"> <title>Your Site</title> <meta name="google-site-verification" content="PASTE-YOUR-CODE-HERE" /> </head> <body> ... </body> </html>
Notes
- Verification only happens when the live site has the tag. Editing it on your computer is not enough; you must upload the new index.html.
- You do not need to add it to every page. The homepage is enough to prove you own the site.
- Keep the tag there even after it verifies. Removing it later can break ownership, and you would need to re-verify.
- After verifying, the same page lets you request indexing and add your sitemap, which helps Google find your pages.
That is the whole trick. One meta tag, one upload, done.
